Acetone Is Used To Make Plastic, Fibers, & Drugs
Readily Soluble In Water, Ethanol, Ether, Etc
Application
Used In Nail Polish Remover & Cosmetics
Denatures Alcohol & Is Used As An Additive
Used As One Of The Volatile Component In Paints
Used In Pharmaceuticals To Have Proper Density
Production of Acetone
Acetone is produced using various production methods. Some of them are as follows -
Cumene Process - In this process, Cumene(Isopropyl Benzene) is heated in presence of Oxygen (air) to form Cumene Hydroden peroxide which is converted to Acetone and Phenol in presence of Hydrochloric Acid and Water
From Alkane Nitriles - Reaction of Grignard reagent with alkane nitriles followed by hydrolisis results in formation of ketones. So, Ethane nitrile reacts with Methyl Magnesium to give Acetone Oxidation of Isopropyl Alcohol - Ketones are prepared by controlled oxidation of secondary alcohol. Using an acidified solution of Potassium Dichromate. To prepare "Acetone" alcohol required is Isopropyl Alcohol.
ASTM Testing Standard
• D3925 Practice for Sampling Liquid Paints and Related Pigmented Coatings
• D6133 Test Method for Acetone, p-Chlorobenzotrifluoride, Methyl Acetate or t-Butyl Acetate Content of Solventborne and Waterborne Paints, Coatings, Resins, and Raw Materials by Direct Injection Into a Gas Chromatograph
• E180 Practice for Determining the Precision of ASTM Methods for Analysis and Testing of Industrial and Specialty Chemicals
Storage and Handling
• Use in well ventilated area. Avoid inhaling vapour. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
• Keep container tightly closed when not in use.
• Storage should be cool, well ventilated away from sources of ignition or heat.
• Prevent accumulation of static charge. Store in original packaging.
Incompatible Materials
Strong oxidising substances. Strong acids
Fire Fighting
• Suitable extinguishing media – water spray, alcohol resistant foam, dry chemicals or carbon dioxide.
• Unsuitable extinguishing media – Do not use water jet
• Wear self contained breathing apparatus
First Aid
• Eyes – Immediately flood the eye with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and get medical attention.
• Ingested – Wash out mouth with water. Do not induce vomiting. Keep warm and at rest. Get medical attention urgently.
• Skin – Remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with water. If irritation persists get medical advice.
• Inhalation – Remove from exposure. Keep warm and at rest and get medical attention
Hazard Statement
• Highly flammable liquid and vapour.
• Causes serious eye irritation
• May cause drowsiness or dizziness
• Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking
Precaution
• Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames/hot surfaces.
• If in eyes: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do.
• Get medical advice/attention.
• Store in a well ventilated place.
